సుందరకాండ.
అథ చత్వారింశస్సర్గః

శ్రుత్వాతు వచనం తస్య వాయుసూనోర్మహాత్మనః|
ఉవాచ ఆత్మహితం వాక్యం సీతా సురసుతోపమా||1||

స|| వాయుసూనుః మహత్మనః తస్య ఆత్మహితం వాక్యం శ్రుత్వా సీతా సురసుతోపమా ఉవాచ తు ||

Hearing those words of benefit from the great soul, the son of Vayu, Sita who is like daughter of Suras replied.

త్వాం దృష్ట్వాప్రియవక్తారం సంప్ర హృష్యామి వానర|
అర్థ సంజాతసస్యేవ వృష్టిం ప్రాప్య వసుంధరా||2||
యథా తం పురుషవ్యాఘ్రం గాత్రైః శోకాభికర్శితైః|
సంస్పృశేయం సకామాహం తథా కురు దయాం మయి||3||

స|| త్వాం ప్రియవక్తారం దృష్ట్వా అర్థసంజాత సస్యః వసుంధరా వృష్టిం ప్రాప్య ఇవ సంప్రహృష్యామి||స కామం అహం శోకకర్శిభితైః గాత్రైః తం పురుషవ్యాఘ్రం యథా సంస్పృశేయం తథా మయి దయామ్ కురు |

' Oh Vanara ! Just as earth feels happy when half grown paddy receives rain , I feel happy after seeing ( hearing) you speaking pleasing words. Act in such a manner that I, the passionate lady emaciated with suffering, can touch the tiger among men with my limbs . Be kind to me'.

అభిజ్ఞానం చ రామస్య దద్యా హరిగణోత్తమ|
క్షిప్తామిషికాం కాకస్య కోపాత్ ఏకాక్షి శాతనీమ్||4||
మనశ్శిలాయాః తిలకో గండపార్శ్వే నివేశితః|
త్వయా ప్రణష్టే తిలకే తం కిల స్మర్తుమర్హసి||5||
స వీర్యవాన్ కథం సీతాం హృతాం స మనుమన్యసే|
వసంతీం రక్షసాం మధ్యే మహేంద్ర వరుణోపమః||6||

స|| హరిగణోత్తమ కోపాత్ క్షిప్తం కాకస్య ఏకాక్షిశాతనీమ్ ఇషికాం రామస్య అభిజ్ఞానం దద్యా చ ||తిలకే ప్రణష్టే త్వయా మనశ్శిలయాః తిలకః గణ్డపార్శ్వే నివేశితః కిల తం స్మర్తుం అర్హసి||వీర్యవాన్ మహేంద్రవరుణోఫమః సః హృతాం రాక్షసాం మధ్యే వసంతీం సీతాం కథం సమనుమన్యసే ||

'Oh Best leader of Vanaras ! Give Rama the token of remembrance where the blade of grass released in anger blinded the crows one eye. When Tilaka got erased you painted a Tilaka with grind stone nearby ! Oh Rama you should remember that. Valiant and comparable to Varuna and Indra, how can Rama stand the Rakshasas who seized Sita and in whose midst Sita is living'.

ఏష చూడామణిర్దివ్యో మయా సు పరిరక్షితః|
ఏతం దృష్ట్వా ప్రహృష్యామి వ్యసనే త్వాం ఇవానఘ||7||
ఏష నిర్యాతితః శ్రీమాన్ మయా తే వారిసంభవః|
అతః పరం న శక్ష్యామి జీవితుం శోకలాలసా||8||

స|| అనఘ దివ్యః ఏషః చూడామణీః మయా సుపరిరక్షితః | వ్యసనేఏతం దృష్ట్వా త్వాం ఇవ ప్రహృష్యామి||శ్రీమాన్ వారిసంభవః ఏషః నిర్యాతితః శోకలాలసా అతః పరం జీవితుం న శక్ష్యామి ||

' Oh Sinless one ! This wonderful Chudamani has been safeguarded by me. In distress seeing this I was happy as though I was seeing you. Oh Glorious one ! Returning this which is born of sea, now engrossed in sorrow it is not possible for me to live'.

అసహ్యాని చ దుఃఖాని వాచశ్చ హృదయచ్ఛిదః|
రాక్షసీనాం సుఘోరాణాం త్వత్కృతే మర్షయామ్యహమ్||9||
ధారయిష్యామి మాసం తు జీవితం శత్రు సూదన|
ఊర్ధ్వం మాసాన్ నజీవిష్యే త్వయా హీనా నృపాత్మజ||10||
ఘోరోరాక్షసరాజోఽయం దృష్టిశ్చ న సుఖామయి|
త్వాం చ శ్రుత్వా విపద్యంతం న జీవేయమహం క్షణమ్||11||

స|| అహం అసహ్యాని దుఃఖాని సుఘోరాణాం రాక్షసీనాం హృదయచ్ఛిదః వాచశ్చ త్వత్ కృతే అహం మర్షయామి|| నృపాత్మజ శత్రుసూదన జీవితం మాసం ధారయిష్యామి | త్వయా హీనా మాసాన్ ఊర్ధ్వం న జీవిష్యే ||రాక్షసరాజః ఘోరః| మయి దృష్టిః సుఖా న |త్వం విపద్యంతం శ్రుత్వా క్షణం న జీవేయం||

' I am tolerating this unbearable grief, the dreadful heart piercing uttering of these dreadful Rakshasas for your sake. Oh Subduer of enemies, Oh Son of the king ! I am bearing this life for one month. Without you I will not live after this month. The king of Rakshasa is dreadful. His look at me is immoral. I do not wish to live even for a moment after hearing the adversities you faced'.

వైదేహ్యా వచనం శ్రుత్వా కరుణం సాశ్రుభాషితమ్|
అథాబ్రవీన్ మహాతేజా హనుమాన్ మారుతాత్మజః||12||

స|| మహాతేజా హనుమాన్ మారుతాత్మజః వైదేహ్యాః కరుణం సాశ్రుభాషితమ్ వచనం శ్రుత్వా అథ అబ్రవీత్ ||

Hanuman , the brilliant son of wind god having heard Vaidehi's pitiable words spoken with tears then spoke.

త్వచ్ఛోకవిముఖో రామో దేవి సత్యేన తే శపే|
రామే దుఃఖాభిభూతే తు లక్ష్మణః పరితప్యతే||13||
కథంచిత్ భవతీ దృష్టా న కాలః పరిశోచితుమ్|
ఇమం ముహూర్తం దుఃఖానాం అంతం ద్రక్ష్యసి భామిని||14||
తావుభౌ పురుషవ్యాఘ్రౌ రాజపుత్త్రావరిందమౌ|
త్వద్దర్శన కృతోత్సాహౌ లంకాం భస్మీకరిష్యతః||15||

స|| దేవి త్వత్ రామః శోకవిముఖః| సత్యేన తే శపే| రామే దుఃఖాభిభూతే లక్ష్మనః పరితప్యతే||భామిని కథంచిత్ భవతీ దృష్టా | పరిశోచితుం కాలః న| ఇఅమం ముహూర్తం దూఖానాం అంతం ద్రక్ష్యసి ||తౌ ఉభౌ రాజపుత్రాః అరిందమౌ పురుషవ్యాఘ్రౌ త్వత్ దర్శన కృతోత్సాహౌ లంకాం భస్మీ కరిష్యతః||

' Oh Devi ! Out of grief Rama is averse to everything. I swear by the truth. With Rama in deep sorrow Lakshmana too is immersed in sorrow. Oh Lady ! Somehow you have been located. This is not time to sorrow. This moment is the end of all your sorrows. The two tigers among men , crushers of enemies , desirous of seeing you , will reduce Lanka to ashes'.

హత్వాతు సమరే క్రూరం రావణం సహబాంధవమ్|
రాఘవౌ త్వా విశాలాక్షి స్వాం పురీం ప్రాపయిష్యతః||16||
యత్తు రామో విజానీయాత్ అభిజ్ఞానమనిందితే|
ప్రీతిసంజననం తస్య భూయస్త్వం దాతుమర్హసి||17||

స|| విశాలాక్షి సహ బాంధవం క్రూరం రావణం సమరే హత్వా రాఘవౌ త్వాం స్వాం పురీం ప్రతి ప్రాపయిష్యతః||అనిందితే రామః యత్ అభిజ్ఞానం విజానీయాత్ తస్య ప్రీతి సంజననమ్ భూయః త్వం దాతుం అర్హసి||

' Oh Wide eyed lady ! Killing Ravana along with his relatives, Raghava will take you back to his city. Oh Blameless lady ! You may give one more token of remembrance which will make him happy'.

సాఽబ్రవీ ద్దత్తమేవేతి మయాఽభిజ్ఞాన ముత్తమమ్|
ఏతదేవ హి రామస్య దృష్ట్వా మత్కేశభూషణమ్||18||
శ్రద్ధేయం హనుమాన్వాక్యం తవ వీర భవిష్యతి|

స|| మయా ఉత్తమం అభిజ్ఞానం దత్తమేవ ఇతి సా అబ్రవీత్ | వీర హనుమాన్ ఏతత్ మత్కేశభూషణం దృష్ట్వా తవ వాక్యం రామస్య శ్రద్ధేయం భవిష్యతి ||

She said, 'I have given the best remembrance. Oh Valiant Hanuman seeing this jewel for my hair Rama will be attentive to all your words'.

స తం మణివరం గృహ్య శ్రీమాన్ ప్లవగసత్తమః||19||
ప్రణమ్య శిరసా దేవీం గమనాయోపచక్రమే|

స|| శ్రీమాన్ సః ప్లవగసత్తమః మణీవరం గృహ్య దేవీం శిరసా ప్రణమ్య గమనాయ ఉపచక్రమే||

The illustrious Vanara held the ornament and bowing his head offered salutations and got ready to depart.

తముత్పాత కృతోత్సాహమ్ అవేక్ష్య హరిపుంగవమ్||20||
వర్థమానం మహావేగం ఉవాచ జనకాత్మజా|
అశ్రుపూర్ణముఖీ దీనా భాష్పగద్గదయా గిరా||21||

స|| జనకాత్మజా ఉత్పాతకృతోత్సాహం వర్ధమానం మహావేగం తం హరిపుంగవం ఆవేక్ష్య అశ్రుపూర్ణముఖీ దీనా భాష్పగద్గదయా గిరా ఉవాచ||

The daughter of Janaka seeing the risen up, eager to leap, quickly growing Hanuman, spoke with eyes filled with tears.

హనుమాన్ సింహ సంకాశౌ భ్రాతరౌ రామలక్ష్మణౌ|
సుగ్రీవం చ సహామాత్యం సర్వాన్ బ్రూయా హ్యనామయమ్||22||
యథా చ మహాబాహుః మాం తారయతి రాఘవః|
అస్మాద్దుఃఖాంబు సంరోధాత్ త్వం సమాధాతు మర్హసి||23||
ఇమం చ తీవ్రం మమ శోకవేగం రక్షోభి రేభిః పరిభర్త్సనం చ|
బ్రూయాస్తు రామస్య గతస్సమీపం శివశ్చ తే sధ్వాస్తు సహరిప్రవీర||24||

స|| హనుమాన్ భ్రాతరౌ సింహసంకాశౌ రామలక్ష్మణౌ సహామాత్యం సుగ్రీవం చ సర్వాన్ అనామయం బ్రూయాః||మహాబలః సః రాఘవః అస్మాత్ దుఃఖాంబుసంరోధాత్ (మాం) యథా తారయతి త్వం సమాధాతుం అర్హసి||హరిప్రవీర రామస్య సమీపం గతః మమ్ ఇమం తీవ్రం శోకవేగం ఏభిః రక్షోభిః పరిభర్త్స్యనం బ్రూయాః | తే అధ్వా శివః అస్తు ||

' Hanuman convey my well-being to the brother Rama and Lakshmana who are like lions, also to Sugriva along with his ministers too. You are capable of making efforts to see the mighty Raghava help me in crossing this ocean of sorrows. Best of Vanaras ! After going near Rama tell him about this intense sorrow and the threats of the Rakshasas. May your journey be happy'.

స రాజపుత్త్ర్యా ప్రతివేదితార్థః కపిః కృతార్థః పరిహృష్టచేతాః|
అల్పావశేషం ప్రసమీక్ష్య కార్యం దిశం హ్యుదీచీం మనసా జగామ||25||

స|| స కపిః రాజపుత్ర్యా ప్రతివేదితార్థః కృతార్థః పరిహృష్టచేతసః కార్యం అల్పావశేషం ప్రసమీక్ష్య ఉదీచీం దిశం మనసా జగామ||

Having accomplished the task, and delighted at heart the Vanara understood the message of the princess. Considering the small task left over he mentally reached the northern shores.

ఇత్యార్షే శ్రీమద్రామాయణే ఆదికావ్యే వాల్మీకీయే
చతుర్వింశత్ సహస్రికాయాం సంహితాయామ్
శ్రీమత్సుందరకాండే చత్వారింశస్సర్గః ||

Thus ends the Sarga forty of Sundarakanda in Ramayana the first ever poem composed in Sanskrit by the first poet sage Valmiki.
